World Physio Day is Friday 8th September and this year’s theme is Inflammatory Arthritis.  

At Clifton Hill Physiotherapy, we see patients of all ages and levels of fitness / physical activity affected by Inflammatory Arthritis.   

There are many different types of arthritis, defined as an acute or chronic joint inflammation.  Symptoms can include pain, swelling, stiffness and redness which may contribute to reduced function.  

Whenever you attend a physiotherapy appointment, our physios assess for signs of inflammatory arthritis, and as such may ask screening questions that may seem unusual to you. Patterns of pain, swelling and other symptoms such as nail changes or skin conditions can provide clues as to the underlying cause of your symptoms.  Sometimes previous illness and certain infections can be triggers for certain inflammatory arthritis.   

Symptoms of arthritis can vary significantly for different people and can vary day by day for each person with arthritis.  With the right support team and approach to management, you can continue to live well and manage your symptoms.  Physiotherapy is an important part of your overall treatment.   

Exercise is a key component to living well with all forms of arthritis.  A physio will provide guidance on appropriate exercise, helping you to exercise safely and build your activity tolerance.  People with Inflammatory Arthritis conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and therefore regular physical activity and other healthy lifestyle choices are important.  People with Axial Spondyloarthritis (inflammatory arthritis of the spine) should undertake a structured, individualised exercise program to help maintain mobility and manage pain. Many people with osteoarthritis see an improvement in pain and disability through exercise.   

At Clifton Hill Physiotherapy we have many different offerings that can assist you to manage your arthritis.  These include the GLA:D program, Clinical Exercise Classes, Strength and Conditioning classes, as well as individual physiotherapy sessions for 1:1 care.
