Happy World Bicycle Day!
Cycling is a great form of low-impact exercise that helps you develop great cardiovascular fitness. It can also be a good form of rehabilitation for other lower-body injuries. Cycling for 30 minutes at a time, 5 days a week would be enough activity to help you reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer.
One of the benefits of cycling can also be one of its drawbacks. Because cycling is non-weight-bearing, there is less stress on your bones and joints. This could mean your bones are not as strong as they could be. There is some evidence that cyclists have lower bone mineral density which can result in an increased risk for fractures later in life. One way to maintain your bone mineral density is to mix in other exercises such as running or resistance training.
