Jane Costello

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist

Jane Costello is an experienced, engaging and motivating physiotherapist. She has an infectious enthusiasm for strength training and learning new movement patterns throughout the lifespan. Her passionate attention to detail helps to address the specific needs of each individual client to maximise their rehabilitation potential.

Throughout her professional career, Jane has been inspired to help rehabilitation clients to return to their highest level of ability, regardless of their starting level. This includes balance work, strength training and a range of recreational and sporting pursuits (modified or otherwise) such as running, cycling, swimming, hiking, and all snow sports (skiing, snowboarding and sit- skiing). She is dedicated to helping empower all she works with to return to a feeling of joy in movement and a sense of overall wellness. Jane has found that the combination of physiotherapy and rehabilitation Pilates can be particularly effective in many patients achieving these goals.

Jane Costello completed her Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) in 2000 at the University of Melbourne and then as a physiotherapist has been dedicated to the area of neurological rehabilitation. She has gained extensive experience working in this area across major public and private hospitals in Melbourne and in the UK. Since 2016 Jane has worked at private neurological practices in Melbourne as a senior neurological physiotherapist using clinical Pilates as one of her valuable tools. Jane is highly experienced in working with clients post spinal surgery, and with neurological diagnosis such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, nerve injuries, traumatic brain injuries and concussion, stroke and cerebral palsy. She has completed post graduate vestibular training and has experience in working with a variety of balance and vestibular disorders. Integrating and keeping people in their communities is Jane’s over encompassing goal.

Her parallel career as a rehabilitation Pilates instructor commenced with an APMA level 1 instructor accreditation completed in 2003. She has further expanded her Pilates qualifications with continuing education with Polestar Pilates, and a Certificate IV in Pilates Instruction (2008) and a Diploma of Professional Pilates instruction (2011) with Pilates International. Her years of experience in Melbourne and Vancouver (Canada) and passionate teaching style has made her a sought-after trainer in teaching other physiotherapists in the Pilates method. She had been a lead presenter for the Australian Pilates and Physiotherapy Institute (APPI) Pilates equipment courses until 2021, enthusiastically teaching other health professionals to become high quality Pilates instructors. Jane is the co- creator and lead presenter of the course “An Introduction to Pilates for Neurological Clients” which she delivers Australia wide for the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA).

It personifies all that Jane believes in about rehabilitation that she volunteers for Disabled Wintersports Australia (DWA) for weekends in winter as a qualified adaptive snow-sports guide and level 2 trainer. Rehabilitation is ultimately about returning to joy in life and Jane works with all her clients to facilitate the steps to get there.
